Powerage was recorded in early 1978 at Albert Studios in Sydney, Australia, and was produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, the longtime production team who had guided AC/DC's earlier albums. The album was engineered primarily by Mark Opitz, who worked closely with Vanda and Young to capture the band's raw, stripped-down hard rock sound. This was the first AC/DC studio album to feature bassist Cliff Williams, whose solid playing contributed to the album's tight, groove-driven rhythm section. The production approach favored a lean, no-frills sound with minimal overdubs, emphasizing the interplay between Angus and Malcolm Young's guitars and allowing the band's live energy to translate directly to the recording. Released in May 1978, Powerage is often cited by musicians and critics as one of AC/DC's most authentic and underrated albums, bridging their early Australian-produced era with the international commercial breakthrough that would come with Highway to Hell under producer Mutt Lange the following year.
