A Moon Shaped Pool was recorded primarily at La Fabrique studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, with additional work done at RAK Studios in London and the band's own studio in Oxfordshire. The album was produced by Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's long-time producer and collaborator since OK Computer, and was released in May 2016. The London Contemporary Orchestra contributed heavily to the record, with arrangements by Jonny Greenwood, lending the album a rich orchestral and choral texture that distinguished it from their previous work. Several tracks had origins stretching back years, most notably "True Love Waits," which the band had performed live since 1995 but had never given a studio release until this album, where it appeared as a spare solo piano recording. The album was created during a period of significant personal upheaval for singer Thom Yorke, whose separation from his partner of 23 years, Rachel Owen, is widely understood to have deeply influenced the record's themes of loss and melancholy.
