Back in Black was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, from April to May 1980, and was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had also produced the band's previous album Highway to Hell. The album was the first to feature vocalist Brian Johnson, who replaced Bon Scott following Scott's death in February 1980, giving the recording a profound emotional and historical significance. Lange was known for his meticulous production style, requiring numerous vocal and instrumental takes to achieve a polished yet powerful sound, and engineer Tony Platt played a key role in capturing the album's iconic guitar tones. The recording sessions at Compass Point were chosen partly for the studio's relaxed tropical environment, which helped the band focus creatively during a difficult period, though the humid conditions posed challenges for keeping instruments in tune. Angus and Malcolm Young's layered rhythm and lead guitar parts, combined with Lange's emphasis on clarity and punch in the mix, resulted in one of the most sonically influential hard rock albums ever made.
