Angel Dust was recorded from late 1991 to early 1992 at Coast Recorders studio in San Francisco, California, and was produced by Matt Wallace, who had worked with Faith No More since their early career. The album was mixed by Andy Wallace, known for his work on Nirvana's Nevermind, which helped give the record its polished yet aggressive sonic character. Following the unexpected mainstream success of The Real Thing and the hit single "Epic," the band deliberately pursued a more experimental and abrasive direction, incorporating eclectic elements such as samples, unconventional song structures, and a wide range of influences from bossa nova to thrash metal. Keyboardist Roddy Bottum and vocalist Mike Patton were particularly influential in pushing the album's avant-garde tendencies, with Patton employing a vast range of vocal techniques and the band using varied instrumentation and studio experimentation. Released on June 8, 1992, by Slash/Reprise Records, Angel Dust was a commercially risky move that initially puzzled the label but has since been widely regarded as one of the most adventurous and influential alternative metal albums of the 1990s.
