Production notes

August and Everything After was recorded at Kingsway Studio in New Orleans, a residential studio owned by Daniel Lanois housed in a converted Victorian mansion. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett, with the band recording largely live together in the atmospheric rooms of the house to capture an organic, intimate feel. Engineering was handled by Kevin Killen, known for his work with artists like Peter Gabriel and U2, contributing to the album's warm, detailed sound. T Bone Burnett encouraged a raw, emotionally direct approach, favoring live takes and minimal overdubs, which complemented Adam Duritz's confessional songwriting style. Released in September 1993 on DGC/Geffen Records, the album emerged during a period when alternative rock was commercially ascendant following the success of grunge, and it became a multi-platinum success driven by the single "Mr. Jones."
