Eye in the Sky was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London during 1981 and released in June 1982, produced by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, who served as the project's core creative duo throughout its existence. Alan Parsons, who had previously engineered landmark albums such as Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and The Beatles' Abbey Road and Let It Be sessions, brought his extensive technical expertise to both the production and engineering of the record. The album made notable use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine alongside live drumming, and featured precise, layered arrangements characteristic of Parsons' meticulous studio approach, blending progressive rock, pop, and art rock elements. Session musicians and vocalists, including regular collaborators such as guitarist Ian Bairnson, bassist David Paton, and vocalist Chris Rainbow, contributed performances under the direction of Parsons and Woolfson, with Woolfson also providing lead vocals on several tracks. Eye in the Sky became the project's most commercially successful album, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200, with its title track hitting number three on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying the duo's reputation for crafting sophisticated, studio-driven pop-rock.
