Delta Machine was recorded primarily at Sound Design Studios in Santa Barbara, California, with the band working alongside longtime producer Ben Hillier, who had previously helmed Playing the Angel and Sounds of the Universe. The album was mixed by Flood (Mark Ellis), a frequent collaborator with the band throughout their career. Released in March 2013 on Columbia/Mute Records, the album marked a deliberate return to a rawer, more blues-influenced electronic sound, with the band emphasizing analog synthesizers, gritty textures, and a darker atmospheric approach compared to their previous work. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore both contributed songwriting, with Gore describing the creative direction as aiming for a dirtier, more organic feel rooted in delta blues filtered through electronic production. The album debuted at number one in numerous countries and was supported by extensive touring, continuing Depeche Mode's pattern of reinvention while maintaining their signature electronic foundation.
