The Trials of Van Occupanther was recorded at Midlake's own studio in Denton, Texas, and released in 2006 on Bella Union Records. The album was largely self-produced by the band, with Tony Doogan (known for his work with Belle and Sebastian and Mogwai) mixing the record. The production reflected the band's shift from the electronic-tinged indie pop of their debut Bamnan and Silvercork toward a warm, analog-influenced sound heavily inspired by 1970s folk and soft rock, particularly artists like Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young. Notable creative choices included lush arrangements featuring flute, mellotron, and layered vocal harmonies, contributing to the album's rich, vintage texture. The album was a critical breakthrough for the band, establishing them as a key act on the Bella Union roster and helping define a broader trend of 1970s folk-rock revivalism in mid-2000s indie music.
