Production notes

The Fragile was recorded over approximately two years from 1997 to 1999, primarily at Nothing Studios in New Orleans, Louisiana, which was Trent Reznor's personal studio facility. The album was produced by Trent Reznor and Alan Moulder, with Moulder also handling mixing duties, while notable engineering contributions came from Steve Albini, who recorded several drum tracks using his characteristically raw analog approach. The recording process was notoriously difficult, shaped by Reznor's struggles with depression and substance abuse, resulting in an extensive and painstaking production that yielded far more material than could fit on a single disc, ultimately being released as a double album. Technically, the album is known for its dense layering of analog and digital textures, combining live instrumentation with heavily processed electronic elements, sampling, and granular synthesis, creating a wide dynamic range from near-silent ambient passages to walls of distorted noise. Released on September 21, 1999 by Nothing Records and Interscope Records, The Fragile debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 but saw relatively disappointing commercial longevity compared to its predecessor The Downward Spiral, partly due to shifting musical tastes and limited radio-friendly singles.
