Back in Black was recorded at the Bahama Islands' Compass Point Studios between March and May 1980, following the death of original vocalist Bon Scott in February. Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, known for his meticulous production work, oversaw the sessions and played a crucial role in shaping the album's polished yet heavy sound, marking a departure from AC/DC's rawer earlier recordings. The band worked with engineer Tony Bongiovi during parts of the production process. The album featured new vocalist Brian Johnson, whose powerful voice and the tighter production approach gave AC/DC a more commercially accessible sound while maintaining their hard rock edge. Back in Black became one of the best-selling albums of all time, partly due to its strategic production choices and the successful integration of Johnson's vocals into the band's established musical formula.
