If You Want Blood You've Got It was recorded at Festival Studios in Sydney, Australia in 1977, marking AC/DC's first album recorded entirely in their home country. The album was produced by Harry Vanda and George Young of the legendary Australian production team Vanda and Young, who had previously worked with AC/DC on earlier material. Recording took place during a period of significant lineup changes, with this being one of the final albums featuring original bassist Mark Evans before he was replaced by Cliff Williams. The production emphasized the band's raw, straightforward rock sound with minimal studio embellishment, capturing their live energy through relatively straightforward recording techniques. The album was released in December 1977 and served as a bridge between their earlier works and the massive international success that would follow with the Back in Black album in 1980.
