Rocks

First released

Rocks, Aerosmith's fourth studio album, was recorded in 1976 at The Record Plant in New York and Los Angeles with producer Jack Douglas, who had previously worked with the band on Toys in the Attic. The album was tracked relatively quickly during a period when the band members were dealing with significant substance abuse issues, which influenced both the raw energy and chaotic nature of the recordings. Douglas utilized analog recording techniques and captured the band's live instrumentation with minimal overdubs, emphasizing their bluesy hard rock sound and Joe Perry's distinctive guitar work. The production choices resulted in a heavier, more distorted sonic palette compared to the previous album, with deliberate emphasis on the rhythm section of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer. Released in May 1976, Rocks became one of the band's most critically acclaimed albums and a cornerstone of 1970s rock music, though it was not initially a major commercial success compared to later releases.
