Moon Safari, Air's debut album released in 1998, was recorded primarily at Studios de la Grande Armée in Paris, with additional sessions at other French studios. The album was produced by Air themselves (Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel) alongside producer Eric Chasalow, who helped shape the project's sophisticated pop sensibility. The production utilized a blend of vintage analog equipment and modern digital recording techniques, reflecting the duo's approach to creating lush, orchestral-influenced electronic pop during the late 1990s French touch movement. The album's warm, layered sound was achieved through extensive use of synthesizers, strings, and carefully crafted production arrangements that drew from 1960s film scores and lounge music. Moon Safari became influential in establishing the French touch aesthetic and demonstrated how electronic music could incorporate orchestral sophistication while maintaining contemporary appeal.
