Sound & Color, Alabama Shakes' second album released in 2015, was recorded primarily at Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the legendary facility known for its rich musical history. The album was produced by Blake Mills, who brought a more expansive and experimental sonic approach compared to the band's debut, incorporating layered arrangements and studio experimentation. The recording sessions featured the band working with engineer Jimmy Nutt and utilized Fame's classic analog equipment and infrastructure. Mills encouraged the band to explore different textures and overdubbing techniques, resulting in a more polished and sonically complex album than their previous work. The production marked a significant evolution in the band's sound while maintaining their soul and blues roots, with the album ultimately winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2016.
