Alabama Shakes recorded "Sound & Color" at various studios including FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and other locations between 2013 and 2014. The album was produced by the band alongside Blake Mills and Jack Contempto, with engineer Andrija Tokic playing a significant role in the technical aspects of recording. The production emphasized live instrumentation and organic sound, building on the blues-rock foundation established by their debut while incorporating more sophisticated arrangements and layered production techniques. The album was released in April 2015 and marked a notable evolution in the band's sonic approach, incorporating influences from 1970s soul and funk alongside their traditional blues-rock roots. "Sound & Color" achieved critical and commercial success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album in 2016.
