Back to Black was recorded primarily at the Daptone Records studio in New York and various London studios between 2003 and 2004. The album was produced by Mark Ronson alongside contributions from Rick Rubin, who worked on several tracks. The production drew heavily on vintage soul and jazz recording techniques, utilizing analog equipment and live instrumentation to achieve its distinctive warm, retro sound that deliberately evoked 1960s Motown and soul music. Engineer Paul Epworth played a key role in the sonic development of several tracks. The album's production reflected a deliberate artistic choice to move away from contemporary hip-hop and R&B production trends, instead embracing classic soul aesthetics that became central to its critical and commercial success upon release in 2003.
