Back to Black — Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse

Back to Black

First released

Back to Black was recorded primarily at Metropolis Studios in London between 2003 and 2004, with additional sessions at other facilities. The album was produced primarily by Mark Ronson, who worked closely with Amy Winehouse to craft the retro soul and jazz sound that defines the record. Producer Salaam Remi also contributed to several tracks, bringing his expertise in hip-hop and R&B production. The recording employed live instrumentation alongside modern production techniques, with session musicians performing strings, horns, and other elements to achieve the vintage 1960s Motown aesthetic. The album's production reflected a deliberate artistic choice to move away from contemporary trends, instead drawing inspiration from classic soul music, which contributed significantly to its critical and commercial success following its 2003 release.
