Merriweather Post Pavilion was recorded primarily at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and at the band members' homes between 2007 and 2009. The album was self-produced by Animal Collective (Dave Portner, Brian Weitz, Josh Dibb, and Scott Mrosovsky) with mixing and mastering assistance from engineer Ben H. Allen. The band employed heavy use of digital processing, layered vocal harmonies, and experimental production techniques, including the use of autotune and granular synthesis as creative tools rather than for pitch correction. The album marked a shift toward a more accessible and pop-oriented sound compared to their previous work while maintaining their experimental electronic foundation. Merriweather Post Pavilion was released in January 2009 and became one of the band's most acclaimed and commercially successful records.
