Drukqs — Aphex Twin

Aphex Twin

Drukqs

First released

Drukqs was recorded and produced by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) primarily between 1997 and 2001, with sessions taking place in various locations including his studio setup. The album was largely self-produced by James, reflecting his hands-on approach to composition and sound design using hardware synthesizers, drum machines, and digital audio workstations. James employed unconventional recording techniques and granular synthesis methods characteristic of his experimental approach, creating the album's distinctive lo-fi and hi-fi juxtaposition across its 30 tracks. Released in 2001, Drukqs represented a departure from the more dance-oriented sound of previous releases, showcasing James's classical music influences and complex algorithmic compositions. The album's extended runtime and eclectic track selection were partly influenced by the artist's desire to present previously unreleased material alongside new compositions, resulting in a sprawling double album that challenged conventional album structure.
