Selected Ambient Works, Volume II

First released

Selected Ambient Works Volume II was recorded by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) primarily between 1994 and 1996, during a period when he was exploring deeper ambient and experimental territories following the success of the first volume. The album was largely self-produced by James, who recorded much of the material in his own studio setup, continuing his hands-on approach to composition and sound design. The production utilized synthesizers, field recordings, and digital processing techniques characteristic of mid-1990s electronic music production, with James employing minimal drums and beatless structures across most tracks. The album was released in 1994 on Warp Records and marked a significant shift toward abstract, drift-oriented ambient music compared to the more structured IDM aesthetic of contemporary electronic producers. The recording process reflected James's experimental methodology, incorporating long-form composition techniques and atmospheric textures that would influence ambient electronic music for years to come.
