The Suburbs was recorded primarily at a residential studio in the Hollywood Hills called the Refinery, as well as at other locations including sessions in New York and New Orleans, between 2009 and 2010. The album was produced by Arcade Fire alongside producer Dave Fridmann, known for his work with The Flaming Lips, who brought his experimental approach to the band's sonic landscape. The production incorporated diverse instrumentation and layered arrangements characteristic of Arcade Fire's style, with particular attention to orchestral elements and textural details. The album's recording process involved multiple sessions across different cities, reflecting the band's desire to capture varied atmospheres and influences during what was a tumultuous period of touring and personal changes. The Suburbs was released in August 2010 and went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2011, becoming a landmark indie rock album of the 2010s.
