Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was recorded primarily at The Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and other studios during 2017-2018, marking Arctic Monkeys' fifth studio album. Producer and engineer James Ford, who had worked with the band on AM, returned to helm the project alongside additional production input from the band members themselves. The album features a notable sonic departure toward lounge jazz, synth-pop, and lounge music influences, utilizing analog synthesizers and orchestral arrangements rather than the guitar-driven rock sound of previous releases. Recording took place across multiple sessions with the band employing a more experimental and layered approach to songwriting and arrangement, with Alex Turner handling most vocal production and instrumental contributions. The production choices reflected the album's concept of a fictional desert casino resort, with attention paid to creating immersive, cinematic soundscapes using vintage synthesizers and digital production techniques.
