Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was recorded primarily at Silvertone Studios in Los Angeles with producer James Ford, who had previously worked with Arctic Monkeys on AM. The album marked a significant sonic departure from the band's previous guitar-driven rock style, incorporating synthesizers, orchestral arrangements, and lounge music influences, reflecting Alex Turner's interest in 1970s soft rock and lounge aesthetics. Recording took place over several months in 2017, with the band experimenting extensively with different instrumental textures and production techniques to achieve the album's cinematic, retro-futuristic sound. The production emphasized layered synthesizers and elaborate arrangements over the guitar-centric approach of earlier albums, with Ford collaborating closely with Turner on the conceptual and sonic direction. The album was released in May 2018 and represented Arctic Monkeys' most ambitious studio undertaking to date in terms of production complexity and thematic cohesion.
