Lady Soul was recorded at Atlantic Records' studios in New York during 1967-1968, primarily under the production of Jerry Wexler, who played a crucial role in shaping Aretha Franklin's artistic direction at Atlantic. The album was engineered by Tom Dowd, one of the era's most accomplished recording engineers, who captured Franklin's powerful vocals with the support of session musicians including the Muscle Shoals rhythm section on several tracks. The recording sessions took place during a pivotal period in Franklin's career, shortly after her breakthrough success with "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)," establishing her as the "Queen of Soul." The album featured a mix of original compositions and carefully selected covers, with Franklin's interpretations showcasing her ability to command both soul and pop material. Lady Soul was released in January 1968 and became one of Franklin's most successful and critically acclaimed albums, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
