Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers

Moanin’

First released

Moanin' was recorded by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers on March 9, 1958, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, one of the most important jazz recording venues of the era. Rudy Van Gelder served as both engineer and producer, known for his meticulous approach to capturing the full dynamic range of jazz ensembles. The album featured the classic Messengers lineup including Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter as composers and saxophonists, with Horace Silver on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. The session was recorded using the high-fidelity stereo techniques that Van Gelder had pioneered, allowing for clear separation of instruments while maintaining the organic ensemble sound that defined hard bop. Released in 1958 on Blue Note Records, Moanin' became one of the most influential jazz albums of the hard bop movement, notable for both its compositions and the clarity of its recording.
