Odelay

First released

Odelay, released in 1996, was produced primarily by the Dust Brothers (Mike Simpson and John King) alongside Beck, marking a significant shift toward a more polished and sample-heavy sound compared to his previous work. The album was recorded across multiple studios including Sire Studios and other locations in Los Angeles, featuring extensive use of sampling, drum machines, and layered production techniques that defined mid-1990s alternative hip-hop production. Engineer Tom Elmhirst played a crucial role in the mixing and engineering process, helping to create the album's dense, intricate sonic textures. The production approach involved heavy manipulation of samples from funk, soul, and rock records, combined with live instrumentation, creating a distinctive blend that influenced alternative music production throughout the late 1990s. Released during the height of the alternative rock boom, Odelay became one of Beck's most commercially successful albums and is considered a landmark record in bridging alternative rock and hip-hop production aesthetics.
