Radio City, Big Star's second album, was recorded in 1974 at the Royal Recording Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The album was produced by John Fry, who also engineered the sessions and had previously worked with the band on their debut. The band, led by Alex Chilton, recorded with a lean setup that emphasized direct, punchy instrumentation and clear vocal production. Fry's engineering approach utilized the studio's technical capabilities to capture the group's power pop sound with crisp drums and defined guitar work. The album was released in February 1974 and, while commercially unsuccessful at the time, became recognized as an influential work in power pop and indie rock history.
