Verve — V6-8526

Conversations with Myself was recorded between 1963 and 1965 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with engineer Rudy Van Gelder overseeing the sessions. The album featured Bill Evans's innovative overdubbing technique, where he recorded multiple piano parts on the same tracks to create the effect of a conversation between three pianos, a groundbreaking approach for jazz at that time. The sessions were produced by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside Records, utilizing multitrack recording technology that was relatively new to jazz music in the early 1960s. Evans's meticulous attention to detail resulted in numerous takes and careful layering of his performances, making the production process unusually demanding for a solo jazz album. The release of the album in 1966 established Evans as a pioneer in the use of studio technology for artistic expression in jazz.
