Waltz for Debby — Bill Evans Trio with Scott LaFaro, Paul Motian

Bill Evans Trio with Scott LaFaro, Paul Motian

Waltz for Debby

First released

Waltz for Debby was recorded at two sessions in 1956 and 1961, with the 1961 recordings at the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York capturing the trio's live performances rather than studio sessions. The album was produced by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside Records, who was instrumental in documenting this important jazz ensemble. The recordings showcase the intimate interplay between Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums, representing one of the most influential piano trio recordings in jazz history. The live Village Vanguard sessions particularly captured the spontaneous creativity of the group during what would be one of the last recording opportunities before LaFaro's tragic death in July 1961. The album's release helped establish the reputation of this trio as a defining force in cool jazz and modal improvisation.
