Bill Withers recorded Live at Carnegie Hall on October 6, 1972, capturing a performance at the iconic New York venue during his early career peak, shortly after the success of his debut album and the hit singles Ain't No Sunshine and Lean on Me. The album was produced by Withers himself along with Booker T. Jones, who had produced his earlier studio work, and it was released on Sussex Records in 1973. The recording preserved the raw, intimate atmosphere of the live setting, featuring Withers accompanied by a full band and retaining the natural audience interaction that gave the album its distinctive warmth and spontaneity. The production approach favored an honest, unpolished sound that reflected Withers's straightforward artistic philosophy, avoiding heavy studio embellishment in the mixing process. The album stands as an important document of early 1970s soul and R&B performance practice, showcasing Withers at a defining moment when his songwriting had already earned him widespread critical and commercial recognition.
