Paranoid was recorded at Dick James Music Studios in London in 1970, following the success of Black Sabbath's debut album. Produced by Rodger Bain, who also helmed their first record, the album was completed in just a few weeks during a period of intense creative momentum for the band. The recording captured the group's signature heavy sound with relatively straightforward techniques typical of early 1970s rock production, utilizing the studio's available equipment without extensive overdubbing or studio effects. The album's raw energy and heavy riffs, particularly on tracks like "Iron Man" and the title track, were largely achieved through live performance in the studio rather than complex layering. Paranoid was released in December 1970 and became a landmark heavy metal album, establishing many of the sonic conventions that would define the genre.
