Jagjaguwar — JAG300

"22, a Million" was recorded primarily at Bon Iver's own studio, April Base, located in Wisconsin, between 2014 and 2015. Justin Vernon worked as the primary producer and songwriter, collaborating with engineer Chris Messina and mixing engineer Tom Elmhirst. The album employed extensive use of granular synthesis, pitch-shifting, and algorithmic composition techniques, representing a significant departure from the acoustic sound of previous Bon Iver releases. Vernon utilized custom software and Max/MSP programming to generate and manipulate vocal and instrumental sounds, creating highly textured and abstract soundscapes. The production reflected contemporary electronic music influences and marked Vernon's most experimental work to date, released in May 2016.
