"22, a Million" was recorded primarily at Eau Claire's April Base studio in Wisconsin, the recording space built by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, between 2014 and 2015. Vernon self-produced the album alongside engineer Chris Messina, who had previously worked with the artist. The production employed unconventional recording techniques including the use of autotune as a primary creative and textural tool rather than merely for pitch correction, and extensive digital manipulation of acoustic instruments to create the album's distinctive glitchy, fragmented sound. The album was recorded across various locations including April Base and other studios, with Vernon experimenting with vocal processing and synthesizer-heavy arrangements that marked a significant departure from the more acoustic and folk-oriented sound of previous Bon Iver releases. "22, a Million" was released in December 2016 and reflected Vernon's embrace of electronic production methods and abstract compositional structures.
