Black Sands, released in 2010, was recorded across multiple studios including Ninja Tune's headquarters in London and various other locations, reflecting Bonobo's collaborative approach to production. The album was produced by Simon Green (Bonobo) working with co-producer Ninja Tune co-founder Coldcut member Jonathan More on several tracks, alongside contributions from engineer James Ford. The production process emphasized organic instrumentation layered with electronic elements, featuring live recordings of strings, brass, and woodwinds that were then manipulated and integrated with digital production techniques. The album showcased Green's evolving production aesthetic, moving toward more sophisticated arrangements and deeper exploration of world music influences while maintaining the instrumental electronic foundation that defined his earlier work. Black Sands marked a significant artistic progression for Bonobo and became one of his most critically acclaimed releases on the Ninja Tune label.
