First released

Boston's self-titled debut album was recorded primarily at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles between 1974 and 1976. The album was produced by John Boys and the band's guitarist Tom Scholz, who also engineered much of the recording and created innovative guitar sounds using custom-built equipment and extensive overdubbing techniques. Scholz's meticulous approach to production involved multiple takes and layering of instruments, which was relatively uncommon for rock music at the time. The recording process was notably lengthy and expensive for a debut album, utilizing multitrack recording technology to achieve the polished, layered sound that became the album's signature. Released in August 1976, the album became a massive commercial success and helped establish the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) sound of the late 1970s.
