Brad Mehldau Trio

The Art of the Trio, Volume 1

First released

The Art of the Trio, Volume 1 was recorded in January 1996 at Avatar Studios in New York City, marking Brad Mehldau's debut as a leader for Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Mehldau alongside engineer Al Schmitt, known for his work on numerous jazz and pop recordings. Mehldau performed with bassists Christian McBride and Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, establishing the trio format that would define much of his subsequent work. The recording captured the group's live interplay with minimal overdubs, emphasizing the organic conversation between the three musicians. This album launched Mehldau's influential career in contemporary jazz and established the template for the successful "Art of the Trio" series that continued throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.
