Untrue — Burial

Burial

Untrue

First released

Burial's second album "Untrue" was recorded primarily between 2005 and 2007 in London using a laptop and various production software, reflecting the lo-fi aesthetic characteristic of dubstep's underground origins. The album was self-produced by Will Bevan (Burial) working in a home studio environment, utilizing chopped and pitched vocal samples, heavily processed drums, and layered atmospheric textures created through digital manipulation. The production employed minimal acoustic instruments, instead focusing on electronic processing techniques and the transformation of found sounds, which became hallmarks of the UK garage and dubstep sound emerging during that period. Released in November 2007 on Hyperdub Records, the album was notable for its murky, compressed sound quality and innovative use of stuttering rhythms and reverb-drenched aesthetics that helped define the dubstep genre. The album's production marked a significant moment in electronic music history, demonstrating how sophisticated and emotionally resonant music could be created using basic home recording equipment.
