Tago Mago

First released

Tago Mago, Can's fourth studio album, was recorded at Schloss Nörvenich, a castle in Germany, during 1971 under the production direction of the band itself with engineer Holger Hahn. The album was engineered and mixed by Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, who utilized innovative recording techniques including multiple tape loops and overdubbing methods that became characteristic of Can's experimental sound. The sessions took advantage of the castle's isolated location and acoustical properties, allowing the band to explore lengthy improvisations that would later be edited into the final compositions. Recorded during a period of significant change within the band, the album features extended instrumental passages and the distinctive vocal contributions of Damo Suzuki, showcasing Can's ability to blend krautrock, funk, and experimental elements. Tago Mago was released in 1971 and became one of Can's most acclaimed works, demonstrating their mastery of studio experimentation and production techniques.
