Mingus Ah Um

First released

Mingus Ah Um was recorded in 1959 at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City, one of the most acoustically sophisticated recording facilities of its era. The album was produced by Columbia's Teo Macero, who would become famous for his innovative production work with Miles Davis. Mingus led an ensemble of talented musicians including John Handy on alto saxophone, Shafi Hadi on tenor saxophone, and Richmond Vocalists, capturing spontaneous performances with minimal overdubbing in keeping with Mingus's preference for live ensemble interaction. The recording sessions took place during a prolific period in Mingus's career and resulted in compositions that blended bebop, blues, and avant-garde elements. The album's success established Mingus as a major voice in jazz composition and ensemble leadership.
