Charles Mingus

Mingus at Antibes

First released

Mingus at Antibes was recorded live at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins, France on July 25, 1960, capturing a performance by Charles Mingus's Jazz Workshop ensemble. The recording was made during a period when Mingus was actively touring Europe and documenting his evolving compositional style and ensemble arrangements. The album features the classic Mingus quintet lineup including Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, which was a significant pairing in Mingus's creative output of that era. The live recording preserves spontaneous interpretations of Mingus compositions and showcases the interactive energy between band members, particularly the interplay between Mingus's bass and Dolphy's woodwind work. The album was later released by Atlantic Records, becoming an important document of Mingus's mid-career period and European performances.
