The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

First released

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady was recorded in April 1963 at Impulse Records' studio in New York City under the direction of producer Bob Thiele and engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who was renowned for his innovative jazz recording techniques. Mingus composed and arranged all the music specifically for this session, creating an ambitious suite-like work featuring an expanded ensemble. The recording was completed in a single session, showcasing Mingus's meticulous approach to composition and his ability to guide complex ensemble arrangements. Van Gelder's engineering captured the full dynamic range of the orchestra, utilizing stereo recording technology that was becoming more prevalent in jazz at the time.
