August and Everything After

First released (1993)

August and Everything After was recorded at Creative Studios in Sacramento, California, the band's hometown, with production by T Bone Burnett, who was known for his work emphasizing raw, organic sound. The album was engineered by Larry Hirsch, and its recording took place in 1993 with the band capturing much of the material in a relatively live, unpolished fashion that reflected Burnett's preference for authentic performances over studio perfection. T Bone Burnett's production approach favored minimal overdubs and a naturalistic sonic aesthetic, which suited frontman Adam Duritz's emotionally intense vocal delivery and the band's folk-rock arrangements. Released on September 14, 1993, on DGC/Geffen Records, the album arrived during a period when alternative rock was commercially dominant following the success of grunge, yet its more roots-oriented sound distinguished it from many contemporaries. The album's breakout single "Mr. Jones" helped propel it to eventually sell over seven million copies in the United States, making it one of the most successful debuts of the 1990s.
