DCC Compact Classics — GZS (2) 1020

Wheels of Fire was recorded between 1967 and 1968 at Atlantic Studios in New York and Atco Studios, with some sessions taking place at the Band of Gypsys studio. The album was produced by Cream themselves along with Atlantic Records producer Tom Dowd, who was instrumental in capturing the band's live energy in the studio. The recording featured innovative use of overdubbing and studio effects, particularly on tracks like "White Room" which showcased Jack Bruce's keyboard work alongside his bass playing. The album marked a significant technical achievement for its time, blending studio-recorded tracks with live performances from the Fillmore and Winterland venues, creating one of the first successful live-and-studio hybrid rock albums. Released in August 1968, Wheels of Fire became Cream's most commercially successful and critically acclaimed work, reaching number one in the UK and establishing the template for heavy rock production techniques.
