The debut album Crosby, Stills & Nash was recorded primarily at Wally Heider's Studio 3 in Los Angeles during the winter and spring of 1969, and released on Atlantic Records in May of that year. The album was produced by the trio themselves alongside Bill Halverson, who also served as the primary recording engineer. The vocal arrangements were a defining feature, with the three singers meticulously layering their distinctive harmonies, often recording vocal parts together around a single microphone to achieve a natural blend. Much of the instrumental work was performed by the trio alone, with Dallas Taylor on drums and Greg Reeves contributing bass on some tracks. The album emerged from the creative ferment of the late 1960s folk-rock and counterculture scene, with all three members having recently left other prominent bands—David Crosby from the Byrds, Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash from the Hollies.
