Superfly — Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Mayfield

Superfly

First released

Superfly was recorded in 1972 at various studios in New York and Los Angeles, with Curtis Mayfield serving as composer, producer, and arranger for the soundtrack. The album was recorded during the height of the blaxploitation film era, created specifically for the Gordon Parks film of the same name. Mayfield worked with engineer John Fischbach and utilized multitrack recording techniques to layer his distinctive falsetto vocals over orchestral arrangements and funk instrumentation. The production employed live musicians alongside studio arrangements, showcasing Mayfield's innovative approach to integrating social commentary with commercially accessible soul-funk music. The album became one of the best-selling soundtrack albums of the 1970s and won the Grammy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special in 1973.
