Superfly — Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Mayfield

Superfly

First released

Curtis Mayfield recorded the Superfly soundtrack in 1972 at various studios in Los Angeles and Chicago, with Mayfield serving as composer, arranger, and producer of the project. The album was recorded using analog tape technology typical of the early 1970s, with Mayfield collaborating with engineer and producer Bill Pate. Mayfield played multiple instruments on the recordings, including guitar, keyboards, and percussion, while assembling a skilled session band to support the orchestral arrangements. The production emphasized lush string arrangements, wah-wah guitars, and layered vocal harmonies that became signature elements of the album's iconic soul-funk sound. Released in July 1972 to accompany the blaxploitation film of the same name, Superfly became both a critical and commercial success, establishing Mayfield as a major force in film scoring and demonstrating the commercial viability of socially conscious soul music.
