Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — MFSL 2-481 · Rhino — MFSL 2-481

Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood in 1972, with Mayfield serving as both composer and producer. The album was created specifically for the blaxploitation film of the same name, marking Mayfield's first major film score composition. Mayfield recorded the instrumental tracks and his own vocal performances with a focus on layering strings, horn sections, and funk rhythms that complemented the film's narrative about drug dealing in Harlem. The production utilized multitrack recording techniques to build the lush orchestral arrangements that became signature to the soundtrack, with engineer involvement from Capitol's technical staff. Released in 1972, the album became one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed film soundtracks of its era, influencing the genre of soul and funk music throughout the 1970s.
