“Heroes” — David Bowie

David Bowie

“Heroes”

First released

Heroes was recorded at the Hansa Studio by the Wall in Berlin during summer 1977, with producer Tony Visconti alongside David Bowie and co-producer Iggy Pop. The album was tracked in an unconventional manner, with Bowie recording vocals in a stairwell to achieve the distinctive, distant sound that characterizes the title track, while the band recorded in the main studio space. The production benefited from the creative input of guitarist Robert Fripp and keyboardist Roy Fox, and the Berlin setting during the Cold War era informed the album's lyrical themes. Visconti's use of innovative recording techniques and the band's experimental approach to song structure resulted in a sonically distinctive record that became one of Bowie's most acclaimed works. The album was released in October 1977 as the second installment of Bowie's Berlin Trilogy.
