“Heroes” — David Bowie

David Bowie

“Heroes”

First released

Heroes was recorded at Hansa Studios in Berlin between September and October 1977, during a period when David Bowie was seeking creative rejuvenation away from Los Angeles. The album was produced by Bowie alongside Tony Visconti, who had collaborated with him on previous projects, with engineer Eduardo Maury overseeing the technical aspects of recording. The title track "Heroes" was notably recorded with Bowie and guitarist Robert Fripp positioned at opposite ends of the studio's stairwell to create a unique vocal effect and capture the emotional distance in the performance. The album reflected the influence of Berlin's cultural atmosphere and the ongoing Cold War context, with themes of division and yearning prominent throughout. The production blended rock instrumentation with electronic elements characteristic of the late 1970s avant-garde movement, establishing Heroes as a landmark album in Bowie's career.
