Hunky Dory was recorded at Trident Studios in London between October and December 1971, with producer Ken Scott and engineer Roy Thomas Baker overseeing the sessions. The album was created during a transitional period for Bowie, following the success of The Man Who Sold the World and preceding the landmark Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Scott and Baker utilized Trident's advanced 8-track recording equipment and employed innovative production techniques, including layered vocal arrangements and diverse instrumental textures that showcased Bowie's artistic range across rock, soul, and introspective singer-songwriter styles. The production prioritized clear vocal presentation and dynamic arrangements rather than the heavily produced sound that would characterize Ziggy Stardust. The album was mastered and released by RCA Records in December 1971, establishing a more intimate and musically eclectic foundation before Bowie's theatrical transformation in 1972.
