Young Americans — David Bowie

David Bowie

Young Americans

First released

Young Americans was recorded primarily at the Record Plant in New York City between July and August 1974, marking a significant shift toward soul and funk influences in Bowie's work. The album was produced by David Bowie and Tony Visconti, with engineer Jay Healy overseeing much of the technical work in the studio. Bowie collaborated with guitarist Carlos Alomar and bassist George Murray, who became key members of his band, while the production featured live instrumentation blended with studio techniques that reflected the emerging Philadelphia soul sound. The recording sessions were notably brief and intense, with Bowie working quickly to capture spontaneous performances rather than extensive overdubbing. This album represented Bowie's artistic response to American music trends of the mid-1970s and served as a transition point between his glam rock period and his later electronic-influenced work.
