De La Soul

3 Feet High and Rising

First released

De La Soul's debut album "3 Feet High and Rising" was recorded primarily at Prince Paul's home studio in New Jersey during 1988-1989, with additional sessions at various studios including Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Prince Paul produced and engineered the majority of the album, working alongside the group to develop their signature sample-heavy, jazz-influenced production style. The album extensively sampled obscure funk, soul, and jazz records, with prominent use of the Akai MPC3000 sampler, establishing a new standard for hip-hop production at the time. Released in March 1989, the album's innovative production approach and playful, positive aesthetic significantly influenced East Coast hip-hop production throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
