"3 Feet High and Rising" was recorded primarily at the Calliope Studios in New York during 1988-1989. The album was produced by Prince Paul, along with producers DJ Premier and Lord Jamar, with significant contributions from the group members themselves. The recording featured innovative sampling techniques and incorporated diverse sonic influences, from jazz to funk, creating a colorful and eclectic production palette that became influential in hip-hop. Prince Paul's production approach emphasized musicality and humor, utilizing a multitrack approach that layered numerous samples and vocal performances.
