Deep Purple in Rock

First released

Deep Purple in Rock was recorded at several locations including the Grand Hotel in Ostend, Belgium and Olympic Studios in London during 1969-1970. The album was produced by Derek Lawrence, who worked with the band to capture their heavy rock sound using the Mark II lineup featuring Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Ian Gillan on vocals, Roger Glover on bass, and Ian Paice on drums. The recording sessions were notable for their raw energy and marked a significant shift toward heavier, more guitar-driven material compared to the band's previous progressive rock direction. The album was engineered to showcase the power of the band's live interplay, particularly the dynamic between Blackmore's guitar work and Lord's organ playing. Released in June 1970, it became Deep Purple's commercial breakthrough and helped establish heavy metal as a dominant force in rock music during the early 1970s.
