The recording sessions were notable for their raw energy and marked a significant shift toward heavier, more guitar-driven material compared to the band's previous progressive rock direction. The album was engineered to showcase the power of the band's live interplay, particularly the dynamic between Blackmore's guitar work and Lord's organ playing.
