Depeche Mode

Music for the Masses

First released

Music for the Masses was recorded between 1986 and 1987 at various studios including Sarm Studios in London and other facilities, with producer Flood handling much of the production work alongside the band. The album marked a significant shift toward a more accessible, synth-pop sound compared to the band's previous work, incorporating live instrumentation alongside synthesizers to broaden their commercial appeal. Engineer and producer Flood's involvement was crucial in shaping the album's polished production style, which helped the record become Depeche Mode's most commercially successful release to date. The recording process reflected the band's desire to create a more mainstream-friendly sound while maintaining their electronic music foundation, resulting in hits like "Personal Jesus" and "Policy of Truth." Released in 1990, the album was recorded during a period when the band was navigating both commercial pressures and internal dynamics, particularly following Alan Wilder's recent arrival as drummer.
