Derek and the Dominos recorded "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" primarily at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida during the summer of 1970, with additional sessions at Olympic Studios in London. The album was produced by Tom Dowd, a legendary engineer and producer who brought his expertise in capturing the band's live energy and layered guitar work. The recording featured the famous dual-guitar interplay between Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, whose improvisational collaboration on tracks like the title song became a defining characteristic of the album. Dowd's technical approach emphasized live band performance with minimal overdubbing on many tracks, though the orchestral arrangement on "Layla" was added later in London with session musicians. The album emerged from a period when Clapton was navigating personal upheaval and creative exploration outside of Cream, resulting in a blues-rock sound that showcased both the Dominos' tight musicianship and the influential addition of Allman's slide guitar work.
