Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

First released

Derek and the Dominos' "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" was recorded primarily at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida in August 1970, with additional sessions at other locations. The album was produced by Tom Dowd and Jerry Wexler, both legendary Atlantic Records producers known for their work in soul and rock music. The recording featured Eric Clapton on guitar and vocals, Duane Allman as a guest guitarist on several tracks including the iconic title song, and a rhythm section that included Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Carl Radle on bass, and Jim Gordon on drums. "Layla" became the album's signature track, notable for its distinctive twin-guitar interplay between Clapton and Allman and Jim Gordon's piano coda, which was later reused as the theme for the ESPN sports program. The album was completed relatively quickly and released in December 1970, marking an important moment in rock music history as it showcased the collaboration between British and American blues-influenced rock musicians.
