Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California in 1978 under the production of Robert Mothersbaugh and Virgin Records producer Ken Scott, who brought significant technical expertise from his work with David Bowie and other major acts. The band employed innovative recording techniques including extensive use of synthesizers and drum machines to create their signature mechanical sound, which was deliberately engineered to complement their artistic vision of humans as robots in a conformist society. The album was mixed to achieve a clean, precise production aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the rougher punk and new wave recordings of the era, establishing Devo's unique sonic identity. The recording sessions took advantage of Capitol's state-of-the-art facilities and represented one of the earliest successful integrations of electronic instruments with post-punk rock music in mainstream production.
