The Nightfly, Donald Fagen's solo debut released in 1982, was recorded primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and Capitol Studios over approximately two years. Fagen produced the album himself alongside co-producer Gary Katz, who had previously worked with him on Steely Dan projects, with engineer Roger Nichols handling much of the technical work. The album showcased Fagen's meticulous approach to production, featuring extensively layered synthesizers, precise drum programming, and sophisticated arrangements that reflected the technological capabilities of early 1980s recording equipment.
